Sanitary landfill for domestic waste means a waste disposal site used for the treatment and disposal of municipal domestic waste with an artificial impermeable membrane to prevent the leakage of waste leachate, with leachate treatment or pre-treatment facilities and equipment, operation, management and maintenance, and eventual closure of the site to meet the health requirements.

Disposal Methods

Landfill technology, as the final disposal method for domestic waste, is still the main method for solving domestic waste outlets in most cities in China. Judging by whether the environmental protection measures (such as seepage prevention at the bottom of the field, compaction in layers, daily covering, landfill gas drainage, leachate treatment, pest control, etc.) are complete and whether the environmental protection standards are met, the domestic waste landfills in China can be divided into three levels.

Several impermeable materials are laid at the bottom of the domestic waste landfill, such as HDPE geomembrane, composite drainage network, polyester filament geotextile, GCL bentonite waterproof blanket. There are several reasons for laying these materials:

Anti-infiltration: Domestic waste contains liquid components, such as wastewater and rainwater, etc. These liquids may infiltrate into the ground through the garbage layer, thus polluting the groundwater. The geomembrane as an impermeable layer can effectively prevent the liquid in the garbage from seeping out and reduce the risk of groundwater pollution.

Preventing the spread of pollutants: Household waste may contain hazardous substances, such as heavy metals and organic matter. If these pollutants spread into the surrounding soil, groundwater or surface water, they can have serious impacts on the environment and ecosystem. Laying geomembranes can prevent the spread of these pollutants and protect water resources and ecosystems.

Improve the stability of landfill: Geomembrane, as a kind of impermeable layer, can reduce the problems of ground subsidence and settlement caused by garbage leakage, and improve the stability and safety of landfill.

Extend the life of the landfill: By effectively preventing leakage of waste and spreading of pollutants, laying geomembranes can extend the life of the landfill. It reduces the environmental risk of the landfill and delays the filling and closure of the landfill.
