The construction method of geocell usually includes the following steps:

  1. Slope treatment:

Clean the slope surface to ensure that it is level, stable and free of loose stones, debris, etc.

For uneven or soft areas, reinforcement and leveling is required.

  1. Measurement and positioning:

According to the design requirements, put out the roadbed slope line, and reserve a certain width (such as 0.5m) on each side to ensure the width of the roadbed.

In the slope marked out the position and direction of geocell laying.

  1. Grass-roots preparation:

Leveling and compaction of the base layer, for example, first lay a layer of thickness of about 0.3m of medium (coarse) sand, and vibration roller grinding until dense.

Ensure that the surface of the grass-roots level is free of obvious bumps, depressions and sharp objects.

  1. Laying of geocells:

Expand the geocell to its maximum size and lay it along the predetermined line and direction.

The geocells are fixed on the slope surface by anchor nails or U-type or F-type steel bars, and the spacing of anchor nails is set according to the design requirements (e.g. 70cm at the top of the slope, 1.5m in the middle), and ensure that the nodes are firmly fixed.

Work cell should be lapped between each other, lap length is generally about 0.2m, adjacent cells using wire and other materials interspersed connection, to maintain overall stability.

  1. Filling and compaction of filler:

After the completion of laying, begin to fill the lattice chamber with soil or other filler in layers, each filling should be moderately tamped or crushed after each filling, so that the filler and the lattice chamber are closely combined.

During the filling process, pay attention to control the thickness of each layer of filling to ensure uniformity, and carry out level measurement and quality check after the completion of each layer of filling

  1. Drainage installation:

Along the edge of the lattice chamber and the roadway, dig a drainage ditch perpendicular to the roadway to ensure smooth drainage and connect with the drainage system of the highway.

Drainage ditch near the chamber should be anchored or riveted piles to strengthen the fixed, the height of the anchor should exceed the height of the chamber a certain safety margin (such as two times more than 300 to 500 mm).


  1. Cladding and protection:

If necessary, cover straw, non-woven fabric and other materials during construction in the rainy season to prevent rainwater from washing away and affecting the effect of geocells, and at the same time play a moisturizing role.

After spraying TBS base material mixture on the slope, it can be covered with nonwoven fabric to promote vegetation growth.

  1. Inspection and repair.

After completing the laying of geocells, inspections should be made to ensure that each cell is properly installed and secured. If there are damaged or loose chambers, they should be repaired or replaced promptly.
